Walter Koenig, the actor who portrayed Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek television series, has died. He was 90. His representative confirmed the death on Monday, noting that Koenig passed away at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Talent agent Zachery McGinnis released a statement honoring the actor’s career. “Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world,” McGinnis said. The agent described Koenig as an individual who inspired audiences through his optimism and humor, noting that his work beyond the science fiction franchise demonstrated his versatility.
Koenig’s death reduces the number of surviving marquee cast members from the original show to two. The original series, which aired on NBC from 1966 to 1969, featured a core team that has seen several members pass away in recent decades. DeForest Kelley died in 1999, James Doohan in 2005, Leonard Nimoy in 2015, and Nichelle Nichols in 2022. The remaining original leads are 95-year-old William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, and 89-year-old George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu.
Takei publicly remembered his longtime friend on social media. “Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades,” Takei wrote in a statement on Instagram. He noted that Koenig served as the best man at his 2008 wedding. The two shared a birthday, with Koenig being born on September 14, 1936, the same date as Takei’s marriage anniversary.
“I will always treasure that he and I shared that date,” Takei added. He described Koenig as a writer, teacher, and loyal friend, telling fans to keep navigating a steady course in his memory.
Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in 1967 for the second season. The character of Chekov was introduced to reflect the show’s Cold War themes, illustrating how individuals from different nationalities could work together in the 23rd century. Koenig went on to reprise the role in seven feature films, starting with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. His film appearances continued through Star Trek Generations in 1994.
Before Star Trek, Koenig appeared in early 1960s television series such as General Hospital and I Spy. After the original series ended, he maintained a connection to the franchise through voice-over work in video games and a cameo appearance in Star Trek: Picard in 2023. He also held a recurring role in the 1990s science fiction series Babylon 5.
McGinnis said Koenig remained active in his work until near the end of his life. The actor received a best actor award at this year’s Independent Shorts Awards for the film Mr. Fleischmann.
