Two people are hospitalized following a shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights on Friday afternoon.

Madison Heights police stated that an altercation began between two groups at the store on John R, south of 14 Mile, shortly after 2 p.m. During the argument, one individual drew a firearm and shot a person in their 20s. Family members of the victim then physically injured the shooter. Both individuals were transported to separate hospitals, where they remain under police guard. Their medical conditions have not been released.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the gunfire erupted near the store entrance. One employee recounted how her boss kicked down the door and sent the staff running out the back exit. She said the team recognized the sound of the shots immediately. Another witness, Mika Wilson, 21, was standing in line with her mother when they heard a loud pop. Wilson explained that the initial sound was mistaken for a balloon popping, a common occurrence in the party supply business. However, multiple shots followed, causing shoppers to scatter. Wilson fled through the rear door of the building.

The incident required a multi-agency response. Troy police assisted the primary investigators, while officers from Ferndale and Hazel Park also arrived at the scene. A shopper who was in the parking lot saw the police vehicles arrive and assumed a shooting had occurred based on their presence. The store is a popular destination for seasonal shopping, and the sudden violence disrupted the afternoon traffic in the area.

City officials have assessed the situation and declared there is no immediate threat to the general public. Despite this, the Madison Heights police department has asked residents to avoid the immediate area and to follow the directions of law enforcement officers on the ground. The presence of multiple police units and the hospitalization of both parties indicate a serious incident, though the exact motive for the initial dispute has not yet been detailed by investigators.
