JetBlue hikes checked bag fees again
The new rates, effective Nov. 3, reflect rising fuel costs and set peak season prices up to $70 per bag.

JetBlue raised its checked baggage fees for the second time this year, increasing the cost for travelers just before the holiday season begins. The airline announced that tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3 carry the new pricing structure.
Most economy passengers flying within the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean will now pay at least $50 each way for their first checked bag. This is an increase from the previous $39 rate. During peak travel periods, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the fee rises to $55 if paid at least 24 hours before departure. If payment occurs within the final 24 hours, the cost climbs to $60 during off-peak times and $70 during peak periods.
The price for a second checked bag also went up. The base rate starts at $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel. Passengers who choose to check their bags at the airport counter can face costs as high as $85 for a second bag.
JetBlue attributed the change to rising expenses. In an emailed statement, the airline said it was adjusting fees to offset higher fuel and operating costs. The company noted that this strategy helps keep base fares competitive while allowing customers to pay for luggage only when necessary.
The fee hikes follow a series of increases triggered by the Iran war, which began in late February with U.S. and Israeli strikes. Those events caused jet fuel prices to swing widely. The initial fee increase in March contributed to a wider round of baggage fee hikes across major U.S. carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest. The conflict with Iran remains unresolved, keeping traffic restricted through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies.
During a third-quarter earnings call last week, JetBlue executives stated that demand has stayed strong despite higher fares. The airline reported that its average fuel price hit $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% jump from the previous year. JetBlue expects that figure to reach $4.64 in the final three months of the year, an 85% increase from the same period last year.
Some passengers, including eligible co-branded credit card holders and loyalty program members, can still check bags for free according to the airline.
