The Federal Reserve kept the federal funds rate at a target range of 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, halting a recent upward trend in borrowing costs. This decision follows a rate increase last month, which marked the first hike in three years. The central bank maintained its stance despite ongoing pressure on consumer prices.

In a policy statement, the Fed described economic activity as growing at a strong pace while admitting that inflation remains high. The bank’s benchmark rate serves as its primary tool for stabilizing consumer prices, which have increased in recent months. The timing of this decision places it just days before Americans vote in midterm elections, where cost of living concerns are a dominant issue. President Trump has previously called on the Fed to lower borrowing costs.

Global energy costs have stayed elevated, complicating efforts to reduce U.S. prices. Last month, the Consumer Price Index showed core inflation rising 2.6% from a year earlier. Both total and core inflation figures exceeded economist expectations. Economists note that solid economic growth and steady consumer spending continue to push prices higher.

Two hawkish dissents, the specific language used in the policy statement, and previous remarks from officials indicate the central bank is likely to raise rates again in December. The federal funds rate affects what banks charge each other for overnight loans, which in turn influences the cost of borrowing across the U.S. economy. Hikes generally increase the cost of bank loans, credit cards, and auto loans while boosting returns on savings accounts.

Bankrate home lending expert Linda Bell said the pause in rate hikes may offer some relief for borrowers, particularly for home equity rates. However, she noted that consumers could face higher borrowing costs in the coming months. Matt Schulz, a chief consumer finance analyst at LendingTree, added that some loan rates might continue to climb ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The Fed’s current target range represents a temporary hold in a tightening cycle. The next scheduled meeting will determine if the bank moves from its current stance to further increases. The decision affects millions of households with variable-rate debt and savings accounts.
