Forecasters have designated Monday as a First Warn Weather Day for the Kansas City area, citing a storm system that threatens damaging winds and possible tornadoes.

The primary window for severe activity runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a second round of storms expected between 9 p.m. and midnight. Meteorologists identify the evening hours as carrying the highest risk for rotating storms.

Residents should anticipate straight-line winds capable of causing damage, alongside hail that will likely remain small. Rainfall totals are projected to range from 1 to 3 inches across the region, with isolated pockets receiving up to 5 inches.

Conditions will remain warm despite the storm threat. Temperatures start in the low 60s this morning and rise to the low 70s in the afternoon. South winds will gust to 40 mph even in areas without active thunderstorms.

Tuesday, Election Day, will see lingering brief downpours, though the severe risk has passed. Voters should plan for mild morning temperatures in the low 60s and afternoon highs in the mid-60s. The weather pattern is described as an umbrella just in case scenario for those waiting in lines.

A fall front passes through Tuesday evening, bringing breezy and cooler conditions. By Wednesday, daytime highs will drop into the 50s, while overnight lows fall to the 40s.

The remainder of the week stays mostly dry, with a low 30 percent chance of showers on Thursday. Weekend highs are expected to reach the upper 50s under mainly dry skies.
