Wet leaves on roads can be as slick as ice, officials warn

Heavy rain saturating fallen foliage in Middle Tennessee creates a slip hazard that rivals winter ice, prompting drivers to increase following distances.

Wet autumn leaves on roads can create conditions as treacherous as a sheet of ice, a hazard often overlooked compared to winter snow and ice.

When heavy downpours soak fallen foliage, the mixture creates a slick layer between tires and asphalt. This reduction in traction can make road surfaces unpredictable and dangerous for drivers in Middle Tennessee.

Thick piles of saturated leaves pose three specific risks to vehicle control. First, they can conceal roadway hazards such as potholes, curbs, debris, and faded lane markings. Second, when combined with standing water from fall rain, the leaf layer increases the chance that tires lose direct contact with the pavement, elevating hydroplaning risks. Third, seasonal downpours lower visibility right when quick reaction times are required.

Drivers are advised to adjust their behavior to account for these conditions. Increasing the following distance behind the vehicle ahead provides extra braking room. On leaf-covered curves, ramps, or intersections, brakes should be applied gently and early rather than suddenly or hard.

If a vehicle begins to slide or hydroplane over wet leaves, drivers should resist the urge to slam on the brakes. Instead, they should gently ease off the accelerator and steer smoothly in the direction of travel until the tires regain traction.

Commuters should build extra time into their morning and evening trips whenever rain and fallen leaves line the roads. While icy and snowy winter conditions typically receive the most attention regarding road safety, wet leaves present an equally serious threat during the autumn months.
