One person died and eight others were wounded in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham on Saturday night. The incident occurred shortly after the annual Magic City Classic football game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett stated that the violence took place along Graymont Avenue. This area was occupied by vendors while most spectators and families had already left the stadium property. Pickett described himself as very grateful that more people were not injured.
Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman confirmed that one individual was detained and taken to headquarters for questioning. Authorities also secured multiple weapons at the scene. The specific circumstances leading to the shooting remained unclear.
Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31-28 in the matchup. The contest is played between two historically Black universities and has continued for more than 100 years. Nearly 70,000 fans attended Saturday’s game, which is one of the largest college football crowds in the nation.
Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr. has proposed creating a Hall of Fame for the event. He is a former NFL linebacker and an alumnus of the school. The game’s long history draws significant attention to the rivalry.
