CJ Carr Faces Critical Test Against Miami to Save Notre Dame's Playoff Hopes
The Fighting Irish sit at No. 11 with a fragile resume, and a win against the Hurricanes is the only path to the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame plays No. 1 Miami on Saturday with the Fighting Irish’s College Football Playoff spot hanging in the balance. The selection committee placed the team at No. 11 on Tuesday, leaving them as the projected final entrant in the postseason field. They have already lost once to No. 9 BYU, and their remaining schedule offers no margin for error.
Quarterback CJ Carr enters the contest with a career defining performance needed to validate his draft status. He has completed 67% of his passes for the season and holds an 18-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio. His adjusted Quarterback Rating stands at 82.7, which ranks eighth in the nation. However, his numbers dip sharply when facing elite defenses.
In the loss to BYU, Carr completed only 27 of 49 passes for a 55% completion rate. That mark is the lowest of his career and came on his highest volume of attempts. He struggled in the second and third quarters, connecting on just 7 of 17 passes while the Cougars built a double digit lead. BYU allows only 5.5 yards per attempt against the pass, a figure that ranks second best in the country.
Carr’s efficiency gap between ranked and unranked opponents is stark. Against ranked teams, he completes 61% of his passes for 6.6 yards per attempt. Against unranked teams, those figures rise to 69% and 10.0 yards per attempt. His average attempt count also jumps from 23.1 to 33 in those ranked games, indicating the offense relies more on the pass when the run game stalls.
Miami presents a unique challenge for Carr’s passing attack. The Hurricanes possess the top rushing defense in college football, but their secondary ranks 122th nationally, allowing 251.9 passing yards per game. Opponents have taken advantage of this vulnerability, with North Carolina’s Billy Edwards Jr. throwing for 341 yards and four touchdowns last week. Florida State also gained 298 passing yards in a recent loss.
The matchup forces Notre Dame to lean heavily on Carr’s arm to counter Miami’s run dominance. The Hurricanes allow 7.1 yards per attempt, a middling statistic that offers an opening for the Irish. Carr is currently the No. 10 overall prospect in the CBS Sports NFL Draft Rankings. A strong showing could make him the first Notre Dame quarterback selected in the first round since Brady Quinn in 2007.
Carr’s record against top competition remains a point of debate. He went 0-2 against College Football Playoff teams last season and lost to BYU, a projected playoff participant. The outcome on Saturday will determine if Notre Dame secures its final playoff spot and if Carr can prove he can perform against the best defenses in the country.
