Ernie Johnson will step down as host of "Inside the NBA" following the 2026-27 season. The 70-year-old broadcaster announced the decision in a three-minute video posted to social media on Wednesday. This marks the end of his 37th year leading the studio show, which has served as a staple of network coverage since 1989.

Johnson stated the departure is a personal choice rather than a forced exit. He noted that the timing feels right after decades of collaboration with his co-hosts. The program features Johnson alongside Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kenny Smith in a pre- and post-game format.

The announcement creates immediate uncertainty for the remaining cast. Barkley, who has described the pair as a "package deal," said last month that this season would likely be his final year. He explained that Johnson had previously asked him to stay for two additional years. Barkley confirmed that if Johnson leaves, he will follow. "If he says he's done, I'm gone," Barkley said.

Johnson clarified that he is reducing his workload rather than retiring entirely. He will remain involved in March Madness coverage for TNT and CBS Sports. Additionally, he recently launched a production company called 32 Bowties. The new venture focuses on creating feel-good stories within the sports industry.
