Two jars containing chemicals for a high-yield explosive sat in the bedroom of a 15-year-old Gainesville student, Alachua County deputies said.

Investigators arrested the Buchholz High School student after a joint operation with the FBI. Authorities determined the teen had been holding online conversations with members and supporters of the Islamic State group, known as ISIS.

The investigation began on Friday when officers spoke with the student’s parents. The parents allowed deputies to search the boy’s phone. Digital evidence included files with instructions for building explosive devices and lists of chemical compounds. ISIS propaganda was also found on the device.

On Monday, detectives returned to the home with the parents’ consent. They located the two jars in the teen’s room. The student told investigators the jars held ingredients for triacetone triperoxide, or TATP, a volatile explosive. He had asked ISIS contacts for help constructing drones and explosives to strike an unknown target.

The Alachua County Bomb Squad unit responded to secure the materials. Detectives then completed a full search of the residence.

The 15-year-old faces a charge of making or attempting to make a destructive device. Prosecutors may file additional charges as the case progresses. Family members stated off camera that they still had questions about the investigation. They declined to provide further comment.
