The Atlanta Falcons were outmatched on the ground on Sunday, suffering a 16-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game defined by a running attack that set a franchise record.
Tampa Bay accumulated 324 rushing yards, a team high, while holding Atlanta to just 224 total yards of offense. The Buccaneers controlled the clock, limiting the Falcons to less than 25 minutes of possession time.
The Falcons failed to convert on all 12 of their third down attempts. They managed only eight first downs, five of which came on the ground. The offense was held to a single field goal and no touchdowns.
The wet conditions in Tampa Bay favored a running game, but the Falcons relied heavily on their quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. attempted 24 passes and completed only eight. He threw four interceptions, ending a streak of 144 consecutive passes without a turnover.
Bijan Robinson, who leads the NFL with 780 rushing yards, had only 19 carries. By comparison, Tampa Bay running backs Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell each carried the ball more times than Robinson. Irving rushed for 76 yards in the contest.
Safety Jessie Bates III saved the Falcons from an early 16-0 deficit with a key play in the first quarter. He punched the ball out of Irving's hands as the runner approached the goal line. The loose ball rolled out of the end zone, allowing Atlanta to start the second quarter trailing 9-0 instead of 16-0.
Coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledged the poor performance in the difficult weather. He said the team had to be better at taking care of the football. Stefanski noted that Penix had played well in his first five games of the season, including a 25-for-34 performance against the San Francisco 49ers the previous week.
The Falcons will travel to Madrid on Tuesday night to play the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The team is dealing with injuries to defensive end Samson Ebukam and wide receiver Zachariah Branch, both of whom have hamstring issues.
Edge rusher James Pearce Jr. returns to the lineup this week after serving an eight-game suspension. He is expected to practice this week, though his snap count remains undecided. Pearce led the team with 10.5 sacks as a rookie last year.
