The 2026-27 college basketball season opened its first ranked contest on Monday, pitting the No. 1 Florida Gators against the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes. The in-state rivals met for the 71st time in their history at the Orion180 Tipoff Classic. The game took place at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. ET.

Florida enters the season at the top of the AP Poll for the second time in program history. The Gators finished the previous campaign 27-8 and retained the core roster that secured the 2025 national title. Miami, led by first-year head coach Jai Lucas, went 26-9 last season and finished 24th in the final AP Poll.

Bookmakers listed Florida as a 5.5-point favorite in the latest odds. The over/under for total points was set at 160.5. The Gators defeated the Hurricanes in their last neutral-site meeting in November 2025. That contest featured 150 total points, falling well below the 171.5 point line listed at the time.

SportsLine’s Projection Model simulated the matchup 10,000 times to assess betting outcomes. The model, which holds a 28-22 record on top-rated college basketball side picks since 2025, identified a trend toward low-scoring games. Each of the last eight meetings between these teams failed to reach 150 combined points.

The model projected the teams would combine for 158 points in Monday's contest. It predicted the under would hit in 58% of simulations. Last season, the under connected in 67% of Miami's games when they were underdogs. For Florida, the total was not reached in 60% of regular-season games. Florida ranked second in the SEC in scoring defense, while Miami ranked fourth in the ACC in points allowed per game.

The model indicated that one side of the spread hits in nearly 60% of simulations. The Gators and Hurricanes are set to play again this season, with Florida holding the historical edge in recent neutral-site encounters. The betting market has priced the Gators as clear favorites despite Miami's solid performance in Lucas' debut year.
