Florida State University dismissed head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday.
The decision came roughly 12 hours after the Seminoles lost a home game to Clemson. The buyout for Norvell is approximately $47 million, which ranks among the largest in the history of college football.
Since the start of the 2024 season, Norvell and his team have compiled a 10-22 record. The program struggled with quarterback play, as DJ Uiagalelei, Tommy Castellanos, and Ashton Daniels all faced accuracy issues. President Richard McCullough announced the leadership change in a statement. He said the school thanks Norvell for his commitment and wishes him and his family well. McCullough noted that the administration understands the deep passion of Seminole fans and shares their high expectations for the program.
Assistant coach Rick Stockstill will serve as interim head coach while the search for a permanent replacement continues. Florida State finished the fall campaign 1-5 against Power Four opponents. The loss to Clemson on Saturday ended a streak where the Seminoles had not defeated Miami, Florida, or Clemson since the 2023 season. In that game, Florida State was favored by five points but lost 36-24.
Norvell posted a 41-39 record during his six-plus seasons in Tallahassee. His tenure included defeats to Jacksonville State in 2021 and Memphis in 2024. He went 24-30 in Atlantic Coast Conference games since 2020. His 13-0 record from three years ago, which did not result in a College Football Playoff appearance, appears distant in the current context.
The buyout represents 85% of Norvell's remaining salary through the end of his contract, which extends to the 2031 season. He was scheduled to earn $10.3 million in 2026. The contract includes offset language that could reduce the total cost if he finds another job. Adding buyouts for his assistants would push the total financial obligation past $50 million. This figure exceeds the combined buyouts for Mike Locksley at Maryland, Dave Doeren at North Carolina State, and Dave Aranda at Baylor.
Florida State will play at Boston College on Saturday. The Seminoles are currently 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The team has won only five Power Four games in the last two and a half seasons. The program fired athletic director Michael Alford in mid-September. McCullough stated last Tuesday that the administration is committed to changing the results and acknowledging the current struggles.
