Romans 12:10 instructs believers to love one another with brotherly affection and to outdo one another in showing honor.

The text contrasts the natural tendency of young siblings to elbow and nudge each other with the biblical mandate for devoted love. It notes that honest self-reflection often reveals that church members view one another with surprise rather than gratitude, acting more like bickering children than a unified family.

Paul employs specific Greek terminology to define this relationship. The word translated as love in this context is philostorgoi, which derives from storge, a term referring to the devoted affection of a parent for a child. The phrase brotherly affection uses the word philadelphia, which denotes the bond between siblings. This is the same root used in the name of the city of Philadelphia, which translates to City of Brotherly Love.

The instruction to honor one another above yourselves aligns with Paul's earlier teaching in Philippians 2:3. That passage calls for humility in counting others more significant than oneself. The goal is to place others first and accept a supporting role without complaint or a desire for recognition. The only competition within the church family should be the drive to serve and help others.

This model of affection points directly to Jesus, who identifies his followers as his brothers and sisters. The analysis cites Philippians 2:6-7, noting that Jesus, though in the form of God, did not cling to equality with God. Instead, he emptied himself by taking the form of a servant.

Jesus serves as the example for this conduct. He demonstrates true brotherly affection by loving his family and outdoing others in showing honor. Believers are called to mirror this behavior when they choose to love one another with this specific Christlike devotion.
