Weta FX, the Wellington-based visual effects studio, is entering a formal partnership with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to establish an AI-driven production center in Asia. The collaboration aims to integrate Taiwanese technology with global screen production workflows.
The agreement will be unveiled on Nov. 6 during the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) in Taipei. The announcement will take place on the festival's main stage immediately following the opening ceremony. Officials from both organizations have kept specific financial terms and operational details private until the public launch.
The initiative operates through three distinct pillars: joint investment, artificial intelligence research and development, and the training of new industry talent. This structure is designed to connect local technologists with international projects. The partnership leverages Weta FX's extensive experience in high-budget films and its global network.
Sue Wang, chair of TAICCA, will preside over the event alongside three Weta FX leaders. CEO Daniel Seah, chief technology officer Kimball Thurston, and VFX supervisor Sheldon Stopsack will join her on stage. Seah, who grew up in Taiwan, has previously connected with the local industry by attending the Taoyuan International Film & Technology Forum in August.
TAICCA, established by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture in 2019, supports creative content across film, TV, gaming, and other media. The agency provides funding, co-production schemes, and international marketing assistance. This new deal fits within its mandate to apply new technologies to content creation, following recent platforms like TTXC Innovations that connect creators with investors.
Weta FX holds a prominent position in the industry, having won eight Academy Awards for visual effects. The studio also holds 17 Science & Technology Awards, eight BAFTAs, and five Emmys. Its current slate includes the upcoming 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' and Marvel's 'Avengers: Doomsday.' The studio's most recent major release was 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' in 2025.
The studio maintains facilities in Wellington, Vancouver, and Melbourne. By partnering with TAICCA, Weta FX seeks to expand its footprint in the Asian market. The move positions Taiwan as a key node for AI-assisted visual effects work across the region.
