Rep. Mike Lawler's contest for New York's 17th Congressional District moved from Toss-up to Leans Republican on Sunday. This shift occurred in Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball final ratings of the year, released one day before the general election. The district is one of only three Toss-up races that moved toward the Republican side during the final rating period. The other two were Kentucky's open KY-6 and Ann Wagner's MO-2 in Missouri. Fourteen of the last 17 Toss-up ratings in the cycle shifted toward the Democrats on the same day.
Harris carried the district in 2024 by a margin of less than one point. Lawler previously won the seat by six points over Mondaire Jones. Lawler, along with Brian Fitzpatrick and Don Bacon, were the only three Republicans to win districts held by Harris in the 2024 cycle. Fitzpatrick's PA-1 district moved to Leans Democratic in the latest ratings. The open NE-2 district, held by Bacon, is now rated Likely Democratic.
Campaign dynamics shifted following primary season statements. Cait Conley, a Democratic primary candidate, spoke on the Hopium Chronicles in June. She stated that Republicans feared a head-to-head matchup with Lawler because she believed she could defeat him. In August, Conley appeared on Morning Joe and described removing Lawler as a priority for Democratic leadership.
Ciro Riccardi, campaign manager for Lawler for Congress, responded to the new rating. He noted that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee told the party in July that Lawler was vulnerable. Riccardi stated that three months later, the rating moved in Lawler's favor. He added that Democratic leaders may cost the party dozens of House seats by spending tens of millions of dollars to unseat Lawler, yet the race is still shifting toward the Republicans.
Election Day voting occurs on Tuesday, November 3, between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Lawler will vote at St. Aedan's Church at 23 Reld Drive in Pearl River. Press personnel must RSVP with the Rockland County Board of Elections at GiblinP@co.rockland.ny.us.
