Luxury hotel pools in India have long drawn international travelers, but a recent tragedy in Bengaluru has prompted a close look at water safety standards for visiting guests.
Two guests died in the pool at the Conrad Bengaluru Hotel on Saturday. The victims were identified as a German flight crew member and a Slovak business manager. Indian media reported that police suspect an electric current in the water caused the deaths.
The hotel confirmed the incident in a statement, describing the event as tragic. It said the cause was not yet known and that staff were assisting investigators. A hotel employee who attempted to save the victims and an American guest who swam to safety were also taken to the hospital.
Both foreign guests were transported to Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road. Medical staff said one victim arrived dead, while the other arrived in cardiac arrest and could not be revived. The two individuals who were rescued were treated and listed in stable condition.
Investigators are working to determine how an electric current reached the pool water. Police have not yet released a final cause of death. The hotel said it was offering full support to the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
