Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munchen enter Saturday's Bundesliga match tied on points for the top of the league, a situation that has not occurred in recent years for these two rivals. The outcome will determine whether either team can pull away from the chasing pack before the winter break.
Niko Kovac, the Dortmund manager, framed the challenge as a team-wide effort rather than a one-on-one battle. Speaking on Thursday, he described the opportunity to face the champions on equal footing as much more exciting, though he warned his side needs 90 minutes at maximum intensity to secure a result. The pressure is amplified because Dortmund has failed to beat Munchen in their last five meetings since 2024.
The central figure in this matchup is Harry Kane, 33, who is playing his first match after winning the Ballon d'Or. Kovac praised the striker's work ethic, noting that Kane did not receive the award for free. He highlighted that Kane has taken another major step forward in his career since arriving in Germany in 2023, despite already being a top-level player in England. For Kovac, this evolution in quality at Kane's age demonstrates the specific danger the forward presents.
Kane was rested on the bench on Wednesday when Munchen defeated second-division side Magdeburg 6-1 in the DFB-Pokal. The Bayern manager, Vincent Kompany, was also absent from the touchline. Kompany had collapsed during a training session on Friday and spent several days in the hospital. His assistant, Aaron Danks, has been leading the team in his absence.
Max Eberl, the Bayern board member responsible for sport, provided medical details to ARD on Wednesday. He stated that Kompany was treated for meningitis, an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain or spinal cord, and has since been discharged from the hospital. Eberl noted that the Belgian coach was also dealing with a viral infection and a hip injury prior to his collapse.
The club plans to honor Kane with a second gesture of recognition on Saturday before kickoff. This follows a corridor of honor his teammates formed for him before the cup match against Magdeburg. The attention underscores the weight of the occasion for both the individual and the team as they prepare for the league leader's confrontation.
