Sophie Griffis is targeting a sub-60-second time in the 100-yard backstroke to qualify for the Florida high school state swimming finals. The senior at Strawberry Crest High School set the goal after competing in the district-level meet, where she sought to improve her times in preparation for the upcoming regional competition.
Griffis recently achieved her best results at the Spring 2026 Area 3 Championship meet in St. Petersburg. During that weekend, she posted personal best times in seven of her eight races. She described the performance as her greatest win to date because dropping even one second is a major accomplishment in competitive swimming. Although the event featured a lower level of competition than other meets, she found the consistent improvements to be a defining moment in her career.
She has competed in swimming since she was eight years old. Griffis identified the 200-yard breaststroke as her favorite event, noting that the distance suits her style better than sprints or longer races. She only has the opportunity to compete in that specific event during club swim meets, as it is not part of the high school schedule.
Her training regimen is intensive during the high school season. She trains six or seven days per week, with double practices three days a week. Her schedule involves swimming in the morning from 5:15 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. before school, followed by afternoon sessions from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. She also swims for the Blue Wave swim team year-round to maintain her conditioning.
Griffis plans to continue swimming after high school, either on a collegiate team or with a club team at her college. She stated that she cannot imagine her life without the sport and intends to keep competing for as long as possible. In addition to her swimming goals, she aims to become a stronger and more confident leader both in and out of the water.
Outside of the pool, Griffis balances her time with family and friends, serves at Grace City Church, and enjoys visiting the beach and shopping with her mother. She uses quiet moments or listening to worship music to settle her nerves before major races, preferring to lock in without distractions.
