Harry Kane watched from the bench as Bayern Munich dismantled second division Magdeburg 6-1 on Wednesday night, a strategic pause for the forward who claimed football's top individual honor just two days earlier. The 33 year old England captain received a guard of honor before the match began, waving to the crowd at the Allianz Arena before settling in for a night off.
Kane became the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d'Or. He is also the first Bayern Munich player to receive the award in 45 years and the first at a German club since 1996. The club managed his minutes ahead of a demanding schedule that includes a clash with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and a Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid next week.
Michael Olise opened the scoring twice, bracketing a goal by Ismael Saibari. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown added two more goals within three minutes in the second half, and David Santos Daiber finished the scoring in stoppage time. The teenager's strike capped a performance where Bayern controlled the tempo despite early defensive lapses.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, according to board member Max Eberl. The Belgian coach had collapsed during a training session on Friday after struggling with a virus that kept him out of practice for several days. Eberl told broadcaster ARD that the issue was identified as a meningeal irritation.
"He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us," Eberl said. He added that Kompany would now rest and take medication, expressing certainty that the coach would return to the touchline at full capacity soon, though no specific date has been set for his return.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks has been in charge for the last two matches, including the 3-1 victory at Freiburg on Sunday. Magdeburg briefly equalized in the first half and hit the post just before halftime, but they could not match the Bavarian pace after the break. Bayern now lead the Bundesliga and prepare to face their rivals in a table topping contest on Saturday.
