The 2026 midterm elections feature thirty-six concurrent gubernatorial contests that will determine the national balance of state executive power. Republicans currently control twenty-six governorships, while Democrats hold twenty-four, according to Ballotpedia data. Democrats require a net gain of two seats to secure a nationwide majority for the first time in two decades. This target is challenging given that Republicans have maintained this executive advantage since 2010.

Nineteen of the races on Tuesday’s ballot are for open seats, creating opportunities for new leadership. Fifteen incumbents are term limited, while others opted out or lost primary contests. Notable departures include Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee is also absent after losing his primary race. These vacancies allow parties to select new candidates without the constraint of incumbent approval ratings.

Georgia presents a key contest between Republican health care executive Rick Jackson and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. They compete to succeed Governor Brian Kemp in a state Donald Trump won by 2.2 percent in 2024. Both parties view the governor’s office as a critical component of state leadership and a strategic target for the 2026 map.

In Nevada, Republican Governor Joe Lombardo defends his seat against Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford. The state utilizes a new congressional map following mid-decade redistricting, which may influence voter behavior. Polls in Nevada operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, with many votes cast by mail. The outcome will directly impact the total number of executive offices controlled by each party.

Ohio features a high-profile matchup between Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton. Ramaswamy’s campaign recently drew national attention for an advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother. The state is also using a new congressional map, which Ballotpedia identifies as a factor in the competitive dynamics. Voters in Ohio cast ballots between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Arizona, Michigan, and Kansas test Democratic strength in regions Trump won in 2024. Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs seeks reelection in Arizona, a state with shifting political dynamics. Michigan, which voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, sees Democrats defending their governorship amid issues of economic strain and tariffs. Voting in Michigan runs from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Kansas Democrats defend their seat in a state Trump won by a wide margin, with the race serving as an indicator of Republican resilience in the Midwest.

New Hampshire and Vermont present challenges for Republicans in states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024. Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte faces a competitive race in New Hampshire, while Governor Phil Scott seeks reelection in Vermont. These contests test Republican strength in traditionally Democratic-leaning New England states. Voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and other states also decide their governors in a complex electoral environment. Polls are open in all states, and final results will determine which party controls the majority of governorships.
